Our first Sat Nav, but we were not impressed. Downloaded all available map updates (be patient as this takes an age due to the size), only to find that not all the downloaded maps (Europe) will fit onto the unit memory. Not a huge issue initially as we were only going to Devon, however not good for our European tour planned for the summer.
However we kept an open mind and set off on our week's holiday into Dartmoor. We had some initial issues with the unit telling us to leave dual carriageways only to go around the roundabout and rejoin again - weird we thought and ignored it. Our main problem was to do with the fact that the unit continuously held the wrong priority over junctions; for example the road would bend to the right and the unit would say take the next right (particularly an issue when there was a right turn available) or we would need to take a left but the unit thought the road we were on continued left so would not say anything (until it recalculated the route when the car didn't progress down the road showing on the map).
The final straw was on route home. We entered the postcode of a large National Trust property, only to be taken down tinier and tinier country lanes until we met a Sat Nav error sign.
Sent the unit back to Amazon and will now revert back to the road atlas, not Sat Nav converts :-(
No real complaints, May 1, 2010
Considering the price I am happy with the Garmin. I don't have experience with more advanced and expensive SatNavs so i can't compare but it does its job. Set up was easy and it acquired lock quite quickly. The screen is easy to read and the personalising is fairly straightforward. Voice is clear and warning alerts are given in good time (although annoying to hear :s). Very helpful to have points of interest. No particular gripes, but it did send me the wrong way once. Otherwise you should find it does its job competently.
Good for what it is, April 30, 2010
Bought the 255W a few weeks ago and have used it seriously a couple of times now. Guided me well in Northern Germany, avoiding a traffic jam very effectively. Set up of maps on the computer a bit complicated I thought but otherwise a very reasonable choice!
Great, till it fell off my dash, April 21, 2010
I was happy with this producet till it fell of my dashboard. I had chosen NOT to stick it onto the screen glass.
SOLUTION the beanbag type mount. I had ordered this at the same time and as soon as it came, (one day later) I found it worked great. I chose the Garmin oficial version.
Great product.
Only complaint - near my house it tries to take me down a "no through road", which would need me to go cross country to get home. No major issue, as by then I know where to go.
